Sin in our corrupted hearts promises joy and fulfillment. It will never deliver on what it promises.

The remedy of every one of these sins [we’ve been talking about in this series] and the place we always go is the fulfillment of Christ in the gospel. Trusting in the goodness of the promises of God. That’s the remedy of every sin we deal with—these heart-level sins.

This morning we deal with the most common, the most comprehensive of these sins: anger; this root sin and what’s underneath it. Anger is a powerfully destructive emotion that reveals a lack of trust in the goodness of God’s control.

I don’t need to describe to you what anger is. We have all felt it. We are experts in this experience of anger. I want us to suspend our desire to justify ourselves and our anger so we can look below the surface and find where our hearts are amiss. Because they are.

If we engage the roots of anger, we will then encounter the grace of God. We will then encounter Jesus. He’s our example. He came to die that we might be conformed to His image. His image is one of gentleness.
