As Moses prepared the people of God to enter the land, he issued them a stark warning. Rather than facing hardship, they would face an even greater danger. The danger of prosperity. The danger of abundance. Now why is this a greater danger? Well, prosperity, I think more than anything else, tempts us to forget God. Then you see forgetting as consequences.

So, we as God's people are to treasure and to worship the Lord in and beyond the abundance of His gifts. This passage is directly relevant to us now as in our abundance we have a frightful case of amnesia. We forget what we ought to remember.

Before we get into our passage, Deuteronomy 8, I want to put us in context a little bit. After 400 years of slavery, the Lord led His people out of Egypt through the Red Sea.

We talked about that last week, and He led them into the wilderness, and they spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness. The book of Deuteronomy is a set of messages given to them by Moses about what they need to know and what they need to be aware of as they enter into the Promised Land.

In this book, Moses recounts what God had done for them in those 40 years. How he had been gracious and he had been faithful in leading them. He repeats the law for them, and in fact the word Deuteronomy actually means “second law.” This is the second time they've received the law from Moses.

So. he repeats the law that God had given and he warns them about the temptations they would face when they went into the Promised Land.
