The Promise of a New Covenant.
Speaker: Pastor James Wychers Series: The Unfolding Gospel Scripture: Jeremiah 1:1
In today's sermon, Pastor James brings us the message titled: "The Promise of a New Covenant" from Jeremiah 31:31-34 as we conclude our journey through The Unfolding Gospel series.
Pastor James opens by sharing about his five-year relationship with a young Muslim man named Sohail, discussing the five pillars of Islam. This leads to the central question: What makes a Christian a Christian? Many might point to saying a prayer, professing faith, obeying rules, or attending church, but Pastor James challenges us to dig deeper into what truly defines biblical faith.
The heart of the message contrasts the Old Covenant given through Moses at Mount Sinai with the New Covenant promised through Jeremiah. The Old Covenant was written on tablets of stone and required the people's obedience—a covenant they repeatedly broke despite God being faithful like a husband to them. Jeremiah powerfully captures their inability to obey: "Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Then also you can do good who are accustomed to do evil" (Jeremiah 13:23). Their sin was etched into their hearts, making genuine obedience impossible through external religion alone.
But God promised something radically different: "I will put my law within them and I will write it on their hearts" (Jeremiah 31:33). Pastor James emphasizes that this New Covenant isn't based on our ability to perform religious duties—it's based on what God has already done. He connects this to Ezekiel 36:26-27 and 2 Corinthians 3:3, showing how God transforms hearts from the inside out through His Spirit. Christianity isn't an outside-in religion of external rules, but an inside-out transformation where God fundamentally renews our hearts.
Pastor James concludes by reminding us that every time we take communion, we celebrate this New Covenant sealed by the blood of Jesus (Luke 22:20). The writer of Hebrews explains that Jesus offered one sacrifice for all time, perfecting forever those who believe. We're invited to draw near to God with confidence through Christ's blood, experiencing His everlasting love and faithfulness. The application is clear: let's abandon the worthless motions of external religion and press on to know the Lord, to love Him, and to worship Jesus with our lives—because we were made for this very purpose, to walk in the light and see God's glory in the face of Jesus Christ.
