A Branch Shall Come Forth
Speaker: Pastor James Wychers Series: The Unfolding Gospel Topic: Hope in Desolation Scripture: Isaiah 11:1–10
In today's sermon, Pastor James brings us the message titled: "A Branch Shall Come Forth" from Isaiah 11:1-10 as we continue our journey through The Unfolding Gospel series.
As we near the end of our journey through the Old Testament, Pastor James reminds us that we're exploring how all Scripture points to Jesus. Today we find ourselves in Isaiah's time—about 740-700 BC—when the Assyrian army with 185,000 soldiers surrounded Jerusalem. Into these dark days of fear and desolation, God speaks hope through the prophet Isaiah. Pastor James paints a vivid picture: it's as though God had swung his ax and there were bare stumps as far as the eyes could see, nothing but barrenness and death. Yet from the stump of Jesse—David's family line—a tender green shoot would spring forth. This isn't just another religious teaching about principles and duties, Pastor James emphasizes. At the heart of our faith is a person—Jesus—who is both the root and the shoot of David, the eternal God who created the family line into which He was born. This is completely unique among all world religions.
Pastor James helps us understand that this kingdom is both "not yet" and "already." The fullness is still future—we're waiting for Christ's return and a new heaven and new earth. But significantly, if we're believers in Jesus, we're already citizens of His kingdom even while we live as exiles in this world. Using a powerful personal illustration about making 80 trips home over 35 years—enduring 400 hours of travel with all its trials—Pastor James asks: why endure that journey? The answer: the joy of home and the welcome love of his parents. This, he says, is our Christian journey. We live in a fallen, broken world full of trials, but our blessed hope is that we're going home someday to our glorious resting place in Jesus' presence.
Pastor James concludes with a clear call to action: we must live as ambassadors for Christ in this world, not worshiping the idols of comfort and ease, but representing our heavenly kingdom. Most importantly, we must keep our eyes focused on Jesus, beholding His glory and beauty. As he powerfully states, "We gravitate toward that which we behold." When we focus on Christ as the center—gazing upon His glorious beauty—we're drawn to Him, we treasure Him, and we find our true satisfaction in Him alone. Our mission is to help each other focus on Jesus as the center of our lives, so that even in the midst of trials and pain, we can live with hope because we know our glorious resting place awaits us.
