The Rest of the Promised Land
Speaker: Pastor James Wychers Series: The Unfolding Gospel Topic: 1 Scripture: Joshua 3:1–17

In today's sermon, Pastor James brings us the message titled "The Rest of the Promised Land" from Joshua 3:1-17. He begins by acknowledging the burdens we all carry—hidden sin, anxiety, wayward children, health struggles, or financial pressures—and assures us that Jesus cares deeply about where we are this morning.
Pastor James walks us through Israel's crossing of the Jordan River, noting how the Ark of the Covenant appears eight times in these seventeen verses. This ark, containing the tablets of the law, Aaron's rod, and a jar of manna, symbolized God's powerful presence among His people. The Israelites were called to follow it while maintaining a respectful distance, illustrating the beautiful paradox of our God—He is both intimately close and awesomely holy. When the priests stepped into the flooding Jordan River, God miraculously dried up the waters, proving His faithfulness just as He had at the Red Sea. Pastor James reminds us that God often requires us to step out in faith before we see the miracle.
The sermon emphasizes that this crossing revealed the nature of the "living God"—unlike the dead idols of the Canaanites, our God actively engages with His people. Drawing from Deuteronomy 32:21 and Psalm 115:3-7, Pastor James contrasts the lifeless gods of the world with Yahweh, the Lord of all the earth. He challenges us with a foundational truth: when things go badly, we desperately need to know that the living, loving, mighty God is with us and has not forsaken us.
Moving to the New Testament, Pastor James connects this Old Testament promise of rest to its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Using Hebrews 4:1-10, he explains that Joshua (whose name means "savior") points to Jesus, the greater Joshua who brings us into true rest. He concludes with Jesus' beautiful invitation from Matthew 11:28-30: "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Pastor James identifies four enemies of this rest—human religion, worldly desires, guilt from past sins, and fear and anxiety. He calls us to intentionally set aside time to focus on God, especially through keeping Sabbath, so we can experience the refreshment and delight that comes from dwelling on the gentle, lowly Savior who has already lifted our burdens through His perfect obedience and sacrificial death.
