Triumph and Trouble in the Wilderness
Speaker: Pastor James Wychers Series: The Unfolding Gospel Topic: 1 Scripture: Exodus 14:1–31, Exodus 15:22–27, Exodus 16:1–12

In today's sermon, Pastor James continues our "The Unfolding Gospel" series by exploring "Triumph and Trouble in the Wilderness" from Exodus 14:1-31; 15:22-27; and 16:1-12. He reminds us that life presents us with tests, not just the trials we expect, but also the more subtle tests of abundance and comfort. Both circumstances ask the same fundamental question: "Will we trust God?"
Pastor James walks us through the dramatic triumph at the Red Sea, where God positioned the Israelites with their backs to the sea and Pharaoh's army bearing down on them. This wasn't a trap for Israel. It was God setting a trap for Pharaoh to demonstrate His glory and supremacy.
When the people panicked, Moses gave them three simple commands: "Fear not, stand firm, be silent." Or as Pastor James puts it, "Stand still and shut up." He emphasizes that deliverance doesn't come from our power and wisdom, but from trusting God to work. Every day we're tempted to seize control and trust ourselves rather than standing still and letting God work. As Psalm 46:10 reminds us: "Be still and know that I am the Lord."
The story then shifts to trouble in the wilderness, where we see Israel's persistent pattern of grumbling. Just three days after singing praises for their Red Sea deliverance, they complained about bitter water. Later, when hungry, they romanticized their slavery in Egypt, preferring Pharaoh over Yahweh. Yet God graciously provided manna and quail for forty years, testing them daily. Would they trust Him each morning for their daily bread rather than storing up for themselves? Pastor James connects this to our own tendency to grumble despite living in unprecedented abundance, noting how we complain when the WiFi goes out or the power fails.
Pastor James concludes by connecting the manna to Jesus' teaching in John 6:30-35, where Christ declares, "I am the bread of life." Just as God rained down manna in the wilderness, He sent the true bread from heaven in Jesus. Our greatest hunger isn't physical but spiritual. Hunger for love, acceptance, meaning, and eternal life. These can only be satisfied in relationship with God through Christ. Pastor James challenges us to examine whether we're chasing satisfaction in worldly things or truly seeking the Bread of Life. He calls us to worship the God who provides rather than worshiping His abundance. He calls us to trust Him daily whether in trials or prosperity, because we were made to know, trust, fear, and worship our God above all else.
