The Blessed Test of Faith
Speaker: Pastor James Wychers Series: The Unfolding Gospel Topic: Faith Scripture: Genesis 22:1–19
In today's sermon, Pastor James returns to our "Unfolding Gospel" series, examining how the Bible tells one grand story of redemption centered on Jesus Christ. Today, we are focusing on Genesis 22:1-19, the story of Abraham's test of faith.
Pastor James guides us through this challenging narrative in three parts: the test given, the test taken, and the test graded. He explains that God tests Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac - the very son through whom God had promised to fulfill His covenant. Unlike us when we face trials, Abraham didn't know this was a test; he simply had to trust God completely.
The way Abraham responds reveals what true faith looks like. Without questioning, Abraham immediately prepares for the journey, telling his servants that both he and Isaac will return - perhaps a statement of faith that God would somehow provide. When Isaac asks about the lamb for sacrifice, Abraham prophetically answers: "God will provide for Himself the lamb." Pastor James emphasizes that Abraham's faith wasn't blind but based on his knowledge of God's character and power.
As the narrative reaches its climax with Abraham raising the knife, God intervenes through the angel of the LORD. This is the first mention of God's covenant name (Yahweh) in this story, appearing at the moment of deliverance. God provides a ram caught in a thicket as a substitute, and Abraham names the place "The LORD Will Provide" (Jehovah Jireh).
Pastor James reminds us that our faith is tested daily - not just on Sundays but in our Monday morning challenges. These tests reveal what we truly trust in. Do we trust God's word and character, or do we try to control circumstances ourselves? Though painful, tests are for our good, yielding "the peaceful fruit of righteousness" when we learn from them.
The story of Abraham and Isaac prefigures Christ's sacrifice. The repeated phrase "your son, your only son" echoes John 3:16 where God gives His only Son. As Abraham did not spare Isaac, "God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all." The ram caught in the thicket represents Christ as our substitute - just as Isaac lived because the ram died in his place, we live because Jesus died in our place.
Pastor James concludes by connecting this story to communion, reminding us that through Jesus's substitutionary sacrifice, we find forgiveness, joy, and true life. In Christ, we are loved, accepted, and approved, giving us a foundation to face all of life's tests with genuine faith in God our provider.
