Today we're beginning a new year-long series called "The Unfolding Gospel" that will explore how the gospel unfolds throughout the Old Testament. Pastor James explains that while we often focus on the New Testament, the Old Testament can seem like a confusing puzzle of disconnected pieces. However, he reveals that the Bible tells one coherent story from Genesis to Revelation - a dramatic narrative of God's unfolding plan of restoration through Jesus Christ.

Looking at Luke 24, we see Jesus himself providing the framework for understanding this grand story. On resurrection day, Jesus meets two disciples on the road to Emmaus who are discouraged after his crucifixion. He shows them how all of Scripture - the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms - points to him. The disciples had missed the main message because they were "slow of heart to believe."

Jesus explains that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer before entering his glory. This was a shocking concept for first-century Jews who couldn't imagine a suffering Messiah. The Old Testament tells a story of terrible sin and rebellion, but also of God's persistent compassion and grace. Jesus's suffering was necessary because God's justice demanded sacrifice to redeem his rebellious people.

When Jesus opened the disciples' minds to understand Scripture this way, their "hearts burned within them." Pastor James challenges us to approach the Bible not just as a history book or collection of moral lessons, but as God's Word that reveals the good news of love and grace through Jesus Christ. The Old Testament stories aren't just about ancient Israel - they're about us, revealing our own need for redemption and God's pursuing grace.

Over the next 32 weeks, we'll examine how the Old Testament consistently points to Christ, sometimes shouting his name and sometimes whispering it. The goal is that our hearts would burn each week as we see Jesus and the gospel revealed, understanding that these stories point beyond themselves to our Savior and apply directly to our lives today.
