The Conviction of the Ungodly

Speaker: Pastor James Wychers Series: Contending for the Faith Topic: False Teachers

In our sermon today, Pastor James continues exploring the book of Jude, focusing on the conviction of the ungodly. We're confronting a challenging but essential truth about God's coming judgment and what it means for us.

We learn that Jesus will return with thousands of holy angels to execute judgment and convict those who have lived ungodly lives. This isn't meant to frighten us, but to help us understand the depth of God's grace. The reality of Jesus' second coming motivates us to honest self-evaluation and energetic mission.

The sermon warns us about "creepers" - false teachers who have infiltrated the church, teaching that we can profess belief in Christ while living a life of sensuality and self-indulgence. These individuals are characterized as grumblers who follow their own sinful desires, seeking personal advantage through flattery and manipulation.

We're reminded that being ungodly isn't just about being a "bad" person, but about living as if we are our own lords. When God is not our Lord, we default to serving ourselves. We tend to grumble, indulge our desires, and seek our own advantage - often without considering others.

However, the message isn't just about judgment, but about grace. The delay in Christ's return is an opportunity for repentance. For those of us outside of Christ, it's a chance to surrender to God's love. For believers, it's a motivation to love, serve, and proclaim the Good News.

We're also challenged to serious self-examination. Even as Christians, we will face scrutiny at the judgment seat of Christ. Our response shouldn't be smug satisfaction, but humble recognition of our own tendencies toward self-focus.

The only way to deal with our sin is to bring it to the cross of Jesus Christ. There, we find forgiveness, cleansing, and the power to repent and believe again and again. Our hope lies not in our own goodness, but in Christ's grace - a grace that pays the penalty for our sin and allows us to walk with God.

Ultimately, we're called to be captivated not by our own desires, but by Jesus and His grace. This is our blessed hope - that through Christ, we can escape judgment and find life both now and in eternity.
