The Joy of Justification Part 1

Sermon Summary

Primary Claim:

Because we are justified, believers have received a benefits package that will never be earned or taken away, enabling Christians to rejoice in hope and in suffering.

Key Scripture

Romans 5:1-5

Main Points

  1. Therefore Justified (Romans 5:1a)

- Builds on previous chapters' theological argument about Abraham's faith

- Justification is a completed act through faith, not an ongoing process

- Not something to be earned through faithful acts

- Available to all who put their faith in Christ

  1. Believer Benefits Package

The sermon outlines four key benefits of justification:

  1. Peace with God (Romans 5:1b)

- Restoration of relationship broken in Genesis 3

- End of war between God and sin

- Manifests in three ways:

  - Peace with God

  - Peace of God (inner peace)

  - Peace with one another

  1. Access to God's Grace (Romans 5:2a)

- Unmerited, undeserved, unsolicited, unconditional

- Not just future promise but present reality

- Full access to the Father's presence now

- More than just prayer or Bible reading - about relationship

  1. Hopeful Perspective (Romans 5:2b-5a)

- Two types of hope:

  1. Hope in the glory of God (future hope)
  2. Hope through suffering

- Suffering produces:

  - Endurance

  - Character

  - Hope that doesn't disappoint

- Not boasting in sufferings themselves but in God's use of suffering for His purposes

  1. The Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5b)

- Makes all other benefits possible

- God's love poured out lavishly

- Guarantee of God's mercy and grace

- Living presence of God within believers

Practical Applications

  1. Unlike employment benefits that must be earned, God's benefits are freely given
  2. Benefits are eternal and guaranteed
  3. Christians should examine where they seek joy and fulfillment
  4. Earthly pleasures should be kept in proper context, secondary to God
  5. The benefits package should remain supreme in believers' lives

Conclusion

Through Christ's perfect life, death, and resurrection, believers receive a complete benefits package through faith alone. This enables them to walk through life rejoicing in hope, even during times of suffering, because their justification is secure in Christ.
