The Sign of Circumcision
Topic: Abraham Passage: Genesis 17:9–17:14
There is perhaps no teaching in the Bible which has been misunderstood and misapplied more than the purpose and meaning of circumcision. Even during the times of Moses and the prophets, the Israelites themselves needed to be reminded time and again that this command God gave to Abraham and his descendants had a meaning. They had to be reminded what the meaning was in the New Testament, as well. The Apostle Paul went into great depth to clarify, correct, and rebuke people’s misunderstanding of the doctrine of circumcision, the sign of circumcision
This was such an issue in the early church that Paul wrote the book of Galatians in part to correct the Galation church on this matter.
It wouldn’t be too far off to say the controversy over circumcision in the early church is the most important controversy in all of church history because it actually applies to this day and it applies to every other doctrine and the foundation of the Christian faith. We can see the true meaning of this sign which God gives in the Bible.
