When My Way Trumps God’s Way
Topic: Abraham Passage: Genesis 16:1–16:16
There is a familiar maxim in our culture, even among Christians, that goes like this: “God helps those who help themselves.”
There was even a man who approached me and said he was searching the concordance in the back of his Bible but couldn’t find that verse. That’s because it isn’t from the Bible. It’s in Aesop’s Fables. And indeed that notion is actually antithetical to the Bible. As Jonathon Edwards famously put it “You contribute nothing to your salvation except the sin that made it necessary!”
Therefore when God makes a unilateral promise like the one he made to Abram in Genesis 15, it goes without saying that He didn’t need a helping hand to fulfill his promise. However, in the text we come to today in Genesis 16, we see the sad consequences for Abram, Sarai, and Sarai’s servant Hagar when they attempt in their flesh to lend God a hand and move up his timeline to suit their desires.
This text is so practical and applicable to us today. May God illuminate his Word to us!
