Passage: 1 John 4:1–4:6

Brothers and sisters we are at war. I’m not talking about the war against ISIS in Iraq or Syria.

There’s a spiritual war being waged right now for your souls and for the souls of every single living person on earth. In many ways, this is a covert war. The enemy uses so much cunning so as to convince people that a war is not even taking place at all.

The evil one sends his minions to deceive and destroy those who would believe them by masquerading as angels of light when they are in reality, servants of the devil.

And once they’ve fooled someone, it’s very easy to lead them down the broad road to destruction.

That’s why the apostle John is going to tell us in our passage today, we have to test the spirits. We need to be like the Berean church in the book of Acts.

Acts 17: 11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

The apostle was preaching the gospel to them but they didn’t only take his word for it. They looked at what he said. They examined the Bible—is what the preacher says, is that actually in accord with what the Bible says?

They examined the Word. They really needed to find out if the preacher was telling the truth. How much tragedy could be avoided if we would just do the same thing.

Examine the scriptures.

Don’t even take my word for it. Examine the scriptures. See if what the pastor is telling you is true. Open up your Bible. Blow off the dust. Don’t only bring it to church on Sunday or rely on the Bible in the pew in front of you.

Crack it open and read it for yourself. If you do so, then you’ll be armed for this battle which is going on. Satan wants to destroy you. He wants that more than anything else.

Let's pray the Lord would speak to us through his Holy Word that we would receive it and that we would test the spirits.
