Shepherds of God's Flock
God's design for church leadership centers on the vital role of pastors, whom Scripture describes as shepherds of His flock. These aren't merely organizational leaders, but called servants charged with caring for God's people with the same devotion a shepherd shows his sheep.
The apostle Paul emphasizes this calling in Ephesians 4:11-12, explaining that God has given pastors "to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ." This role carries weighty responsibilities - teaching sound doctrine, protecting against false teaching, and nurturing spiritual growth among believers.
Just as Jesus, our Chief Shepherd, laid down His life for His sheep (John 10:11), pastors are called to serve sacrificially. They're instructed to "shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you" (1 Peter 5:2). This shepherding includes teaching, guiding, protecting, and caring for church members with genuine love and commitment.
The importance of pastoral ministry is underscored by Paul's solemn charge in Acts 20:28: "Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood." This reminder emphasizes both the gravity and privilege of pastoral service - these shepherds care for a flock purchased at the highest price.
At CVC, we encourage our church family to support our pastors’ ministry through prayer, respect, and willing fellowship in the gospel.
