What is Christianity?
Passage: Matthew 9:9–9:13, 1 Corinthians 1:26–1:29
What is Christianity?
As we’ve been studying the gospel of Matthew, its author has been quite quiet about himself until today.
In our passage this morning, Matthew describes how he himself was called by Jesus and how he became a disciple.
A number of weeks ago, I said that the Roman Centurion was probably the most unlikely follower of Jesus, but I was wrong. I’m convinced that that distinction belongs to Matthew.
In this section of scripture we’ll be looking at today, we come to the very root and heart of Christianity
Perhaps one of the greatest problems of our times is a misunderstanding of what true Christianity really is.
What a tragedy that is.
Instead of the gospel being preached in many or maybe even most churches today, something sinister has replaced it. In America’s case, I believe the majority of the preaching today in even what would be called Evangelical churches looks more like moralist therapeutic deism than actually biblical Christianity and the gospel.
What is Moralist therapeutic deism?
There’s actually an article about that in Wikipedia. It gives five things that are the main tenants of Moralistic therapeutic deism which I believe characterizes the vast majority of preaching in churches today.
- There’s a God who exists who created and ordered the world and watches over human life on earth.
- God wants people to be good and nice and fair to each other as taught in the Bible and by most other world religions.
- The central goal of life is to be happy and feel good about yourself.
- God does not need to be particularly involved in one’s life except when God is needed to resolve a problem.
- Good people go to heaven when they die.
It might not be stated in those exact ways from various pulpits around the country. But if you ask most Christians, especially younger Christians, what they believe, they will give you some version of what I just read; that’s the truth.
But, that’s not Christianity. That’s not the gospel.
Because of that misunderstanding of the gospel, many people are going to hell even though they’re going to church.
And even though this kind of preaching has been used by Satan to the ruin of many souls today, thank God we’re going to see what Christianity truly is in our verses from Matthew 9.
